The gap in question was previously filled with either fiberboard or concrete crack sealant but enough of it has deteriorated to conceivably allow moisture in. One big difference between the se two home exteriors is that when dry stucco is breathable it has tiny pores that allow water to evaporate from behind it so that moisture doesn t build up and cause rot. This prevents water from moving up and into the gaps between the sill and the cement wall it sits upon. The gap between the wall and the trim is fairly large at least 1 2 inch.

I have a stucco sided house that i am repairing repainting. A stucco wall is decorative but stucco itself has no strength and cannot support any weight. This will hopefully be the fix that keeps that wall of the sunroom nice and dry. The differences between stucco wall concrete wall stucco is breathable.

In the course of repairs some of the caulk weatherstripping between the trim and the house came off. Stucco is cement fine sand and lime mixed with water into a paste that s spread over a surface. But you should not in any event seal off the gap behind the stucco as moisture will go through the surface and trapping it will only lead to more decay further up into the wall cavity. Stucco is made of these ingredients as well plus lime.

To remedy this issue i installed backer rod in the gap that i then covered with concrete crack sealant. Differences b etween concrete and stucco. This first coat is known as the scratch coat this coat helps the final coat bond properly to the wall. Allow the scratch coat to harden slightly.

In any case this is not a drainage style system.
